Chennai Metro Train mega project in Rs. 10,000 crores

Nov 09 2007, Chennai: To address the ever growing trafic need in Chennai, the cabinet decided to implement metro as in Delhi and Kolkatha with the budget of Rs. 9,757 crores. The metro will be for the total of 46.5 km with underground tracks for 20 km and remaining 26.5 km will be on the flyovers.

Delhi Metro gave recommendation to operate in 2 routes. The first route will be from Vannarapettai to Mennampakkam airport via Egmore and Theynampet. The second route will be from Fort to St. Thomasmount via Anna Nagar, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar and Alandhur.

The cabinet approved this project and seeks funding support and loan from the central government. The Japan National Bank also may fund this project.

Velachery MRTS delayed

Sep 02 2007, Chennai: The inauguration of Thirumailai-Velachery mass rapid transit system is being delayed as the Commissioner of Railway Safety has directed Southern Railway to replace the rails in a section. Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu talking to newsmen here on Saturday said Southern Railway would invite the Chief Minister to inaugurate it.

The Minister said the third line from Tiruvallur to Arakkonam and one more BG line from Korukkupet to Ennore would be completed before this fiscal end. The Railway Ministry requested the Government to allot land for setting up a yard at Arakkonam.

Rs. 9,600 crores proposal to spend for Chennai metro project

Jul 22 2007, New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is finalizing the proposal to cover the additional 7 km as per the government request. As per the new proposal, St. Thomas Mount will be the metro terminal instead of Giundy as Chennai metro flying train will be coming up to St. Thomas Mount.

The cost of the proposal is increased from Rs. 6,000 crores to Rs. 9,600 crores. DMRC is working with Tamilnadu government to finalize the proposal and the final plan will most probably be submitted to the government in a month.

The previous plan was to have the underground train from Vannarappettai to Simpson and as per the current proposal it will go up to Saidapet Maraimalai Adigal bridge via Mount road.

It is expected that the implementation of Chennai Metro will look very similar to Delhi Metro and might take up to a year to start this work. As per the known sources, it is expected that it might take minimum 5 years to complete this work.
